Parks & Public Realm
The parks and public ream design for the community will ensure that all parks are engaging and offer a variety of neighbourhood centric programming opportunities. These will be connected via pedestrian, cycling and vehicle routes. The primary retail area will feature a shared street concept, enhancing the pedestrian experience, offering more active retail frontages and programming, while recognizing the importance of vehicle access to local residents.
Community Connections
Appleby GO West will fully embrace the City of Burlington’s shift to more sustainable transportation practices, including active and public transit. As part of an Major Transit Station Areas (MTSA) and located on a major city thorough fare, Appleby GO West has an opportunity to design a new community that priorities pedestrian and cyclists, while still efficiently planning for the vehicle traffic many still rely upon. Planning for today and protecting for tomorrow will be the basis for the community’s connectivity strategy.
Retail & Community
As an essential component of a complete community, Appleby GO West will provide for a variety of commercial uses including essential community services, traditional neighbourhood anchors and feature opportunities for local retail, as well as food and beverage. Currently contemplated in two primary locations, west and east, the commercial areas will be strategically oriented to major roadways but focus on inner neighbourhood connections and gathering opportunities. The west area of the plan will focus more localized and active retail within the shared street.
The Concept
The concept for Appleby GO West is for a community focused inclusive community where people of all ages can thrive. A plan that truly provides housing, recreation and essential services for everyone. The masterplan orients housing around activated parks and public realm, promotes efficient transportation while protecting neighbourhood local streets, and focuses commercial opportunities at key neighbourhood nodes.
